Hi i am a new owner of a horsfield torty, had him for about 4 wks now and i think ive got it right and he does something else to confuse me even more. I am a complete beginner so please excuse silly questions. I have a problem with him not coming out of his bed so i bring him out put him under the basking lamp. He seems quite lazy just now as well. I was told to bath him twice a day to so i have followed instructions, but this has not helped. I still have to take him out of his bed area twice a day to bath him, he has been peeing and pooing ok, but the last two days hes not eating as much and he is now laying sideways on a slope in his bed now, is that normal?

Hi jane The set up is a grey plastic container which is 3.5 ft by 2.5ft. I have 50/50 sand soil. One end is his basking lamp and a uvb light and also have a bit of slate for that is slanted slightly as he likes to lay on that. The temp for basking lamp can be 30 -32. I have in the middle a water area for him to go in to but he has not been there and have stones round that. At the cool end is his bed which is half a flower pot which has sand soil in it and he goes in there fine but forgets to come out. The temp at that end just now is 16. His diet varies from dandys, sow thistle, rocket ,watercress, roses, fuscia, lambs lettuce, corriander, raddicchio., lollorosso andlollo verde . Things like that i have been feeding but im still doing my homework on the weed bit as im trying to do whats right for him but as i say im no expert and am green on "the tortoise" I was given him from a friend and he got him from a private owner . Anyway hope this helps i hope im doing this right. Tnx for your patience. sharon f

Hi jane tnx for your reply. The tortoise has came out now and then but the problem is that he can easily sleep 24 hrs and i am worried a bit as dont no if this is normal. After a whole day i do bring him out and put under basking lamp bath etc. The past 3 days he seems to want to sleep more and has not eaten, but i have been bathing him. Do i just let him sleep or keep getting him up every day? I am not sure if how long a tortoise can sleep without any harm coming to them. Advice would be good as i worry myself stupid some days and am not an expert on torts but learning. tnx sharon
